“Full rods,” Gabriel decided. “Thrust until they are exhausted.”

Buff nodded approval, briefly disrupting the helmet huddle that let them talk in vacuum. “One rod per engine will thrust twenty-seven hours, and give us two hundred mips. That’s seventeen million miles a day, which should throw them off.”

“Dammit,” Luci grumbled. “There is no them. We don’t have to do this! We don’t have to do anything, because we are not being chased by evil pirates.”

“No, we aren’t being chased by pirates,” Gabriel agreed, “probably.” He looked up at Buff. “Twenty-seven hours is too long. We would be easy to follow, and dust will be coming through the walls. I don’t want to expose my passengers for more than six hours.”

Buff did the math. “Six hours of thrust will give us forty mips.”

“No, I want the full two hundred mips.”

“What?” Buff’s helmet rotated toward Gabriel. “Oh no. God dammit!” Buff straightened and began gesticulating. He slammed his gauntlet fist into the bulkhead and waved his arms.

The others stared at him.

He returned to the huddle. “I knew this would happen! When you see a lever labeled, Stupid, you think it was made for you to pull!”

“We have no searchbeam,” Gabriel said tiredly. “We won’t see them coming.”

Luci glared at him. “There are no pirates!”

Teeth gleamed in Buff’s helmet. “If my swords break, we’ll be transformed into a beautiful star.”

“On the very bright side,” Steven observed, “if we intend to mark ourselves with a giant flare, then we might as well turn on the electric plant. With proper illumination, we can repair much faster. And for an added bonus, the giant flare will light up our course before we go dark and change it.”

“Dammit,” Luci groused. “We don’t have to do this. We don’t have to do any of this. There are no pirates.”

“None at all,” Gabriel echoed. “Probably.”
